Nicholas Caradoc Hoult (born 7 December 1989) is an English actor, best-known for his portrayals as Marcus Brewer in About a Boy, Hank McCoy in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, Tony Stonem in the E4 teen drama series Skins, Jack in Jack the Giant Slayer, and as R in Warm Bodies.

Early life



Hoult was born in Wokingham, Berkshire, the third of four children of Glenis (née Brown), a piano teacher, and Roger Hoult, a pilot for British Airways. His siblings are Clarista, James, and Rosanna, and his great-aunt was actress Dame Anna Neagle.

On The Graham Norton Show, it was revealed that Hoult's middle name of Caradoc is pronounced /ka.rÉ'ː'dÉ"k/, which in Welsh means "The Beloved One".

Career



Hoult attended Ranelagh School, made his professional debut in the 1996 film Intimate Relations (at the age of 7), and worked mainly in television, until the success of About a Boy, in which he played Marcus. He practiced ballet along with his sisters and was involved in productions of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker with the national ballet, but claims he was never any good at it.

While at Farnborough Sixth Form, he gained a lead role as Tony Stonem in the first two series of E4 teen drama Skins. Hoult was nominated for a Walkers Home Grown Talent Award. for the role. In 2009, Hoult appeared in the Tom Ford film A Single Man, alongside Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. He replaced Jon Kortajarena as the face of Tom Ford eyewear for the spring 2010 collection.

In 2010, Hoult was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award, voted on by the British public. He has appeared in the video to The Midnight Beast song "Lez Be Friends". He also voices 'Elliot' in the video game Fable III. On 8 July 2010, it became public that he had been cast in the role of Beast in the X-Men spin-off, X-Men: First Class, directed by Matthew Vaughn. MTV Networks' NextMovie.com named him one of the 'Breakout Stars to Watch for in 2011'. In 2013, Hoult starred as the title character in the film Jack the Giant Slayer, and also as the main character, "R", in the zombie romance film Warm Bodies.

Hoult appeared in the newest X-Men film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, which was released on 23 May 2014. Hoult, Gemma Arterton and Stephen Fry have been tapped to lend their voices to the family animation feature Once Upon a Time in the Kitchen.

Hoult is starring along with Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce, and Jacki Weaver in Drake Doremus' futuristic love story Equals, which began filming in August 2014 in Japan and Singapore. He will also appear as a main character in the October 2014 film Young Ones alongside Michael Shannon, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Elle Fanning.

Personal life



Hoult dated X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past co-star Jennifer Lawrence.

The couple started dating in 2010 while filming X-Men: First Class, but ended their relationship in January 2013. They reportedly reconnected 6 months later in July 2013, after filming X-Men: Days of Future Past together. The couple split in August 2014, stating different work schedules to be one of the issues.

Charity work



For his ongoing charity work with Christian Aid, Hoult was entered into the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children's Hall of Fame in 2007. Nicholas also supports the Enough Food IF campaign, a charity to end global hunger, and he works closely with the Teenage Cancer Trust.
