The year 2003 in film involved some significant events. Releases of sequels took place with movies like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Pokémon Heroes, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Freddy vs. Jason, X2: X-Men United, Bad Boys II, Scary Movie 3, and Final Destination 2.

Highest-grossing films

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King grossed more than $1.19 billion, making it the highest-grossing film in 2003 worldwide and in North America and (at the time) the second-highest-grossing film of all time in North America. It is now, unadjusted, the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time.

Finding Nemo was the highest grossing animated movie of all time but it has since been overtaken by Toy Story 3 in 2010, the 3D rerelease of The Lion King in 2011 and Frozen and Despicable Me 2 in 2013, leaving it currently the 5th highest grossing animated film of all time and now the 3rd highest-grossing animated film after its 3D release and the 25th highest grossing film of all time (it was once the 9th highest grossing film).

• November 17: Arnold Schwarzenegger sworn in as Governor of California.
• December 22: Both of the movies from the Matrix trilogy released in 2003 were shut out of visual effects Oscar consideration by the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee.
• December 31 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences mails nomination ballots in which it qualifies 254 films released in 2003 as eligible for Oscar consideration.
